Read with the Rabbi: Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor by Yossi Klein Halevi
Read the book first, then join Rabbi Aaron Starr and community shlichah Nina Yahalomi Klevitsky for a discussion of this important work. Lyrical and evocative, Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor is one Israeli’s powerful attempt to reach beyond the wall that separates Israelis and Palestinians. In a series of letters, Yossi Klein Halevi endeavors to untangle the ideological and emotional knot that has defined the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for nearly a century. Using history and personal experience as his guides, he unravels the complex strands of faith, pride, anger, and anguish he feels as a Jew living in Israel. In an unprecedented effort to share both sides of this terrible struggle, a new edition includes an extensive Epilogue of Palestinian letters to Halevi. Some angry, some empathetic, but all respectful, these responses break open the conversation between Israelis and Palestinians, laying bare the heartfelt emotion on both sides and showing that peace may be possible if one is only willing to listen.
This reading was chosen in advance of Yossi Klein Halevi’s appearance at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills on Monday, March 16, 2020. Senior Research Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute, Yossi Klein Halevi will speak at the 78th Annual Rabbi B. Benedict & Ada S. Glazer Institute on Judaism. For details, go to hartman.org.il.
