Creating Shanghai Sonatas

Thursday, October 19, 2023 4 Cheshvan 5784

7:00 PM - 8:30 PMCongregation Shaarey Zedek Sanctuary

This performance tells the lesser known story of the Jewish refugees that fled to Shanghai in the late 1930's to escape Nazi Germany and how they bonded with the Chinese people through a shared love of music.  CSZ is proud to host this program to exemplify how two very different cultures came together at a challenging time in their history.   Learn more about Jewish Shanghai and Creating Shanghai Sonatas by reading an interview with Sean Gao, a principle creator of this show, that will appear in next week's Jewish News.   CLICK HERE to be one of the first to read the article!

Sean will be bringing his violin virtuosity and will also feature his 6-WIRE ensemble as well as four talented musicians from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. The program will also feature clips from the staged performance of the musical and classical, Jewish, and Chinese music. An exhibit from the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum is also on display in the CSZ lobby.

This program is generously sponsored by the Louis C. and Edith Blumberg Foundation in memory of Alene and Graham Landau (z'l).

Patron tickets include reserved seating and an afterglow reception with the artists. All Patrons that sign up by Tuesday, 10/17 will be included in the program booklet.

Sorry, Registration has ended.
