Family Havdalah and Challah Bake

All families are invited to join us for a Sunday morning Havdalah and Challah Bake. Led by PTO President Sara Rothenberg and our resident bread expert Jennifer Delproposto, parents and kids will learn all about how to make Challah, as well as to make extra challot for those who need it most, through Heart2Hart Detroit. Join us on Zoom! The preparation and ingredient lists are below. The community is invited – share with friends and join us!

Items needed: 

  • Large mixing bowl 
  • Wooden or plastic mixing spoon 
  • Liquid measuring cups (at least a 2-cup capacity but 4 is super helpful) 
  • Measuring cups for dry ingredients 
  • Measuring spoons 
  • Clean surface for kneading dough (large cutting board, counter, etc.) 
  • Pressandseal wrap preferred for covering the dough when rising, although a towel or other plastic wrap can work too 
  • Parchment paper 
  • Cookie sheet or sheet pan 
  • Cooling rack (not needed but preferred)

Ingredients needed: 

  • 4-5 cups of flour 
  • 1-1/4 cups of warm water (NOT HOT: think a baby’s bathwater) 
  • 5 tbsp of sugar separated into 1 tbsp and 4 tbsps 
  • ¼ cup of honey 
  • ¼ cup of vegetable oil plus 1 tbsp for greasing the bowl 
  • 2 whole eggs (preferably room temperature) 
  • 2 egg yolks (for egg wash glazing, after the dough rests) 
  • 1 tbsp salt 
  • 1 tbsp of dry active or rapid yeast (approx. 1 ½ envelopes)
