As Jews, we are commanded to pursue justice. That pursuit of justice, however, begins within. Members of the CSZ family are invited to join Rabbi Aaron Starr as we seek to battle discrimination in general and racism* in particular by learning, discussing, reflecting and committing to pursuing justice in our world through anti-racism.** We are looking for participants willing, first, to reflect and to grow, and then, second, to teach and help to guide others.
Facilitated by Dr. Aja Burks, LMSW, owner of Transformative Mind Counseling in Southfield, this group meets once a month for six months beginning in August, in order to discuss Self-Awareness and Race; Self- Awareness & History Talk; Race relations & your relationships; Raising your race consciousness; and Next Steps towards Anti-Racism & Allyship. Heavily subsidized by the Rabbi Aaron Starr Discretionary Account at CSZ. This is our final meeting in the series.
At this time, because of the pandemic, we are presuming the meetings will take place online.
In this group, participants will:
*Racism speaks to the blatant, overt, and often covert acts of discrimination that are exemplified by White supremacy. This act denies people of color their equal rights and opportunities (Sue, 2018). Racism impacts the individual, group, and institutional structures of the United States.
**Anti-racism is the beliefs, actions, and ideology to oppose the individual, group, and institutional structures of the world. The work of anti-racism is a life work and can start at any time.
