As Jews, we are commanded to pursue justice. That pursuit of justice, however, begins within. Members of the CSZ family are invited to join Rabbi Aaron Starr as we seek to battle discrimination in general and racism* in particular by learning, discussing, reflecting and committing to pursuing justice in our world through anti-racism.**  We are looking for participants willing, first, to reflect and to grow, and then, second, to teach and help to guide others.

Facilitated by Dr. Aja Burks, LMSW, owner of Transformative Mind Counseling in Southfield, this group will meet once a month for six months in order to discuss Self-Awareness and Race; Self- Awareness & History Talk; Race relations & your relationships; Raising your race consciousness; and Next Steps towards Anti-Racism & Allyship. Heavily subsidized by the Rabbi Aaron Starr Discretionary Account at CSZ, the cost per participant is $100, and covers the entire course.

We plan to meet at 10:00 a.m. on the following Sundays:

  • August 23
  • September 6 (Labor Day weekend)
  • October 18
  • November 15
  • December 6
  • January 17

At this time, because of the pandemic, we are presuming the meetings will take place online. Links will be shared after registration.

In this group, participants will:

  • Foster a “within-group” community in which we are working to understand anti-racism concepts;
  • Increase knowledge of historical components that impact our worldview;
  • Become self-aware of your identity development and the impact it has on society; and
  • Begin the process to move into an anti-racist framework

*Racism speaks to the blatant, overt, and often covert acts of discrimination that are exemplified by White supremacy. This act denies people of color their equal rights and opportunities (Sue, 2018). Racism impacts the individual, group, and institutional structures of the United States.

**Anti-racism is the beliefs, actions, and ideology to oppose the individual, group, and institutional structures of the world. The work of anti-racism is a life work and can start at any time.

Join us for this group to learn and understand more of anti-racism work and potentially start your journey. Limited to 15 participants. Please register by August 14, 2020.
