UPDATE AUGUST 7, 2020
Religious School Will Be Fully Online This Fall
Due to the current social gathering restrictions in our community, and projected restrictions this Fall, CSZ Religious School will be fully online for the first semester. We hope to have pop-up, appropriately distanced, in-person experiences in the future, but for the fall semester, we will be hosting all Religious School activities online through Zoom.
Although we will not be gathering physically for the first semester, we have upgraded our curriculum to feature fantastic new online learning, which includes state-of-the-art Hebrew language and T’fillah training games, fun interactive home assignments, Chevrusa-style small group discussions, enrichment tutoring, and our new, specialized B’nai Mitzvah Program for Grades 6 & 7.
Shiurim B’internet – Online Classes
Shiurim B’internet is comprised of weekly online classes on Sundays and Tuesdays for all grades, as well as small group tutoring on Thursdays for B’nai Mitzvah students. This new virtual curriculum also includes virtual Shabbat learning, and optional enrichment tutoring for students in younger grades seeking additional training.
The First Day of Classes & Sunday Schedule
The first day of classes will be on October 4, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. The day will begin with an all-school Zoom assembly where we will celebrate the holiday of Sukkot together as a Kehillah (community) and then break off into individual grade Zoom classrooms.
Individual grade online Sunday classes will begin at 10:00 a.m. for grades K-7. Online classes on Sundays will typically last between 45 minutes and one hour depending on the age and attention of the students in each classroom.
Each class will be focused on grade-specific Hebrew language learning and T’fillot (prayer) cognition, as well Torah, Jewish holiday, and Shabbat ritual training. Each grade’s online classes will include game-based education, multi-media integration, and at-home activities.
Grades 6 & 7 Sunday online classes will be focused on individualized B’nai Mitzvah training, as well as class-based Mitzvah projects, and Torah learning.
Tuesday classes this year will be different as well. CSZ Religious School will offer online classes for all grades on Tuesdays, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on October 6, 2020.
Grades K, 1, and 2 meet together online on Tuesdays for Kitah Sababa. This is CSZ Religious School’s innovative early elementary class which focuses on Aleph-Bet learning and basic Hebrew prayers. This class also includes interactive games, music, and stories. It is the perfect weekly Hebrew, T’fillah, and mitzvah refresher for our youngest learners. It runs from 4:30 – 5:15 p.m. each Tuesday, online.
Grades K-7 will meet online on Tuesdays with a brief all school T’fillah program at 4:30 p.m., led by Assistant Cantor Leonard Gutman, followed by a one hour individual online class for each grade.
Thursdays – New Specialized B’nai Mitzvah Training This Year!
Along with Sundays and Tuesdays, classes for Grades 6 & 7 will include Thursdays this year. These grades will be focused on training for each student’s individual B’nai Mitzvah ceremony. These classes will feature small group work and individual tutoring to develop each child’s Torah, Haftarah, T’fillah, and D’var Torah skills, as well as their specific Mitzvah projects.
Each Religious School session on Sundays and Tuesdays will include general class time for work on Mitzvah projects and D’var Torah development, as well as individualized and small group tutoring focused on Torah and Haftarah blessings, trope, and scriptural chanting tailored specifically to each student. Thursdays will be solely focused on individual B’nai Mitzvah preparation with individual and small group tutors.
In the first two weeks of the Religious School year, each student in Grades 6 & 7 will develop their Tochnit (plan). This is a B’nai Mitzvah learning schedule which lays out exactly what each student’s learning goals will be for the year at Religious School. Together, with their teachers, and individual tutors, each student will attain and hone the specific skills that they need for their special day.
I am very excited about this new B’nai Mitzvah initiative for Grades 6 & 7 and have been recruiting some of the finest educators in our community to become tutors in this program. If you know of B’nai Mitzvah tutors who may want to join our team, please e-mail their information to my office! And, if you have any questions about this new initiative, please contact me directly and I will be happy to tell you about the details of this exciting new Religious School component.
