A Rabbi, a Priest, and a Prophet: Rabbi Starr and Father Yaw Discussing Isaiah

Tuesdays, September 3, 10, 17, 24, 2024
12:00 p.m. on Zoom
Join Rabbi Aaron Starr and Father Chris Yaw of St. David’s Episcopal Church to explore the role of Isaiah’s teachings in Jewish and Christian thought, the history of the Book of Isaiah, and how certain verses of the text unite and divide Christians and Jews. Journeys: Intro to Judaism

Tuesday evenings beginning September 10th

An introductory class to Jewish life, learning, ritual, and thought for those interested in joining the Jewish people or just learning more about their tradition. Youth Tashlich

Join us at Franklin Cider Mill for a special morning of learning and fun: Youth Tashlich! We’ll gather as a community and toss duck food into the pond as we learn about the mitzvah and ritual of

Celebrating Hank Greenberg’s Legacy 90 Years after his Yom Kippur Stand

September 18th marks 90 years since Detroit Tigers player, Hank Greenberg took a stand as a Jew and did not play baseball on Yom Kippur, but rather attended services that day at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Join us for a panel discussion that will reflect on the life and legacy of Hank Greenberg. We will hear from baseball experts and people that personally knew the legendary
player and were featured in Aviva Kempner’s documentary film, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. In partnership with Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation, Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, and The Ciesla Foundation. Registration requested

Confronting Jew-Hatred in the 21st Century

Dr. Rachel Fish, a “scholar warrior” expert against antisemitism and anti-zionism will speak about approaches to help fight Jew-Hatred. At Congregation Shaarey Zedek, we know that the path to falling in love with Judaism isn’t one size fits all. That’s why we started the Prayground. Part prayer service, part music festival, and wholly participatory, the Prayground invites families to explore the High Holy Days with a wide array of fun and engaging activities spread about our beautiful campus. Come join us and experience the Days of Awe like you’ve never experienced them before!  There is no cost for this event, but registration is requested

Pray and Play

Parents and young children are welcome to play with toys in CSZ’s Brodsky Tikvah Chapel during services. The sanctuary service will be streamed in the room on the big screen. Children in the Pray and Place space must be supervised by an adult.

Tween and Teen Service Learning

CSZ Tweens and Teens, join Youth Advisor Annie Klinger during the High Holidays in the Teen Lounge for hands-on learning, community building, and leadership opportunities. We’ll be working with eco-forward community organizations during the High Holidays. You should look forward to trying new snacks and hanging out in a Tween and Teen-only space. See you there and bring your friends!

Congregation Shaarey Zedek invites all new babies, parents and grandparents to participate in this wonderful event! Please contact us no later than Monday, September 9, 2024
with your baby’s English name and Hebrew name, date of birth, names of parents, siblings, grandparents and any living great grandparents. Please also send a high-quality digital baby photo.

Yad Ezra Food Collection

Pick up a paper bag on Rosh Hashanah, fill it with Kosher non-perishable foods for donation to Yad Ezra. Drop off as you enter CSZ for Yom Kippur Services or during office hours all week leading up to Yom Kippur. It is a mitzvah to engage in charitable giving year-round and especially during the Holy Days. Yad Ezra has requested the following items: canned vegetables and beans, pasta, rice, canned tuna, cold cereal, and flour.

CSZ member David Victor is a past national president of AIPAC. A native of Detroit, David received a BBA from the University of Michigan in 1981, and a law degree in 1984 from the University of
Michigan School of Law. After practicing law very briefly in Chicago he returned to the Detroit area to assume control of American Educational Institute, a national, accredited continuing education company for healthcare and legal professionals and continues as its chairman to this day. David’s primary community involvement since the early 2000’s has been focused on Pro-Israel activism with AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. CSZ Rebbitzen Rebecca Starr is a Vice President of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, where she oversees educational and program development to manage strategy and organizational synergies throughout North American regional hubs. A proud graduate of the University of Michigan, Rebecca is a respected educator and community organizer, lending her expertise frequently to CSZ, JLearn, and a variety of national initiatives.

Celebrate the beautiful holiday of Sukkot as we usher in this joyous week on the first night of Sukkot, with spirited davening at 5:30 p.m. followed by a fall harvest meal in the sukkah.
